About the Big Ten Conference
Founded in 1896, the Big Ten Conference is an athletic conference made up of 12 (yes, 12) universities. Northwestern University, a founding member of the Conference, is the only private school in the Big Ten. The other universities are large, public state schools. The mission of the Big Ten Conference is to excel athletically without compromising the priority the universities assign to their academic standards. However, maintaining the conference's status as one of the preeminent athletic conferences in the country also endures as an important component of the Big Ten student-athlete experience.
