More About Top Engineering Colleges

If you're interested in studying engineering in college, there are two types of colleges to consider: specialized engineering colleges and universities with engineering departments. The colleges listed on this page represent both types of schools.

Specialized Engineering Colleges

Typically, a specialized engineering college is one that awards more than one-third of their undergraduate degrees in engineering.  So, the colleges listed above with high percentages of students majoring in engineering – such as CalTech and MIT – can be considered specialized engineering colleges.

If you want to gage the breadth of engineering research conducted at a school and the undergraduate research opportunities, a good proxy is the number of PhD degrees the school awards in engineering.  You can also look at the percentage of engineering PhDs to bachelor degrees in engineering for each college. Universities that award no PhDs in engineering generally focus less on research and more on undergraduate teaching.

Universities with Engineering Departments

Many universities – such as Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and University of Michigan – have strong engineering programs even though the schools may not be thought of as engineering colleges per se.  Most of these universities still have a relatively high percentage of students who major in engineering – typically 10-25%.

As with the specialized engineering colleges, if you want to gage the breadth of engineering research conducted at a school and the undergraduate research opportunities, a good proxy is the number of PhD degrees the school awards in engineering.  You can also look at the percentage of engineering PhDs to bachelor degrees in engineering for each college. Universities that award no PhDs in engineering generally focus less on research and more on undergraduate teaching.
