Top Small Massachusettes & Connecticut Colleges
The conference currently known as The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) consists of Massachusetts and Connecticut colleges.
The conference, founded in 1985 by six women's institutions, was originally called The New England Woman's 6 Conference. After accepting two more colleges
in 1988, its name was changed to the NEW8. In 1999, two more colleges were added and the conference became known as the NEWMAC, the name it uses today.
Upon its last renaming, the conference began to sponsor conference play and championships for men's teams in addition to the women's teams that were already being sponsored.
Although all ten NEWMAC colleges emphasize academics over athletics and share the same athletic philosophies in the sports they sponsor, the colleges are quite different
from each other. Note that their undergraduate enrollments range from 840 to 4,258. Three of the colleges only accept women (Mount Holyoke, Smith, and Wellesley) and others
are known for their engineering (M.I.T., W.P.I., and the Coast Guard Academy) or business programs (Babson College), while the remaining colleges emphasized liberal arts.
